sound and vision

life is what goes on around all the stuff you plan for...
i'd arranged to shoot some images at top banana on saturday, for my chronicle of the birmingham retro scene... so had to deff out two simultaneous flickr meets in town(probably the most well attended meets of the year...) - but the car alarm outside my window on friday morning at 3:00 am had other ideas, keeping me from sleeping properly(and inhabiting that place between being able to get up sleep in the lounge or hitting REMs in bed).
so i wake-up dazed with saturday lunchtime finding me wandering up and down kings heath, looking for a mythical subway i thought i'd seen the previous week, before giving-up (it is on the high street - i just didn't look hard enough) and visiting the shop(only to find i'd left the battery for the canon in the charger owing to my sleep deprived state!), so i had to make do with the olympus, which is ample for the job, but i would have preferred the bokelicious canon...

i spent an hour or two chatting with greg who runs the shop - we talked about vintage shops in the north(see earlier article on flip) and steam trains....
and of course, not only do i partake of his fine coffee(much needed), but i try on a few jackets, which he has many good examples of... i resisted the urge to buy another hot-rodder's brown-leather flight jacket, despite there being a couple of damn good ones in the shop - and opt for one in black which is nice and light without a fur collar, looking slightly distressed and worn, the way a jacket should be...

i could've stayed longer - just to look at the clothes and chew the fat, but i took some pictures and headed home - stopping off at the subway in cotteridge and being tempted to buy a load of johnny cash and frank sinatra on vinyl in one of the shops... but i had to get home to process the images(and shoot some footage for my 11-11 project on the way), as we were going out in the evening to the empty AMC in ladywood to watch burn after reading...
nice evening out - and up with lark on sunday to grab some david bowie early discography(and i am looking forward to hearing some of that!!!), construct a new TTV gadget out of the 30's german camera i bought a few weeks ago... using some duct tape, an orange juice carton and black card that H. had bought for me to use on the current TTV device(which i was experimenting with the other night, using remote flash)
TTV flash unit
i spent a hour on ebay, and purchased a new jessops flash, and some gel slides for a forthcoming strobist project, using different gels in one image.
anyway, here's the first version of the new gadget...

that all finished(except for testing it out), i moved onto my next project of the day, and spent a couple of hours working on a backing track for the 11-11 film... playing on the hammond.
i tried jamming my usual blues riffs mashed together, but after taking a break for lunch, was inspired to try a hammond version of "on the road again" with no luck, but moved onto jamming the same riff in "C" except with a latin rhythm ...which seemed to work, so after a few attempts i finally got one track i was happy with - and am listening to it now whilst adding some reverb in soundforge!!!
it swings....
more of that to follow.... it has a title "blues for a haven" in honour of alan haven...
i'll probably post the track to the helvatones pages on myspace and reverbnation sometime this evening, as i was going to work-out and lift some weights, but i'm still knackered from no sleep on friday....
