blow up

this weekend is a bit of a busy one... browsing shops full of old stuff and taking photos, so much so that i began to feel like david hemmings in blow up, which i'm now listening to on the hi-fi...
friday was spent PP-ing some photos from the previous weekend session in "eightball studios" and learning the bassline to "cool jerk" which the helvatones are covering next... i'd like to do some songs off blow-up at one point too... but i'm giving my ears a rest.

i spoke to alan haven too on friday night, as i'll be visiting him up north soon... and he always has interesting stories about the music scene or swinging london(which he was part of at one point, being a nightclub musician who seems to know everyone from that period!)...
then bang! all of a sudden it's saturday morning and i'm off to erdington to hang-out with grouchy shoppers and to browse the thrift-shops for bargains(no go though, the only stuff i find is on my own high street... a couple of classic soul 45's in original paper sleeves), someone gives me a flyer for a rockabilly club as she's been told to give them out to people who look like they might enjoy that sort-of thing... i like erdington as it so grimly hangs onto that late 60's feel.

then it's back off into town (sadly not in jimmy saville's roller...), to meet-up and quickly shop for healthy foodstuff (i'm now vaguely on the food doctor diet, and have lost so much weight that i can now fit into my 34" red tab 501's again) before heading homeward to set-up the studio lights to photograph claire our model for the day(images to follow), some good work comes from that, despite a technical hitch with the camera, which i can sort in PP...
then on the phone to AH again and spoke with "babylikesscarymovies", who will be modelling for us today....

on the high street i bumped into fellow flickrite zoekay, who seemed perturbed to find out i was taking shots for nude magazine, so i make a mental note to direct her to the website for the magazine... which actually has nothing to do with nudes... but is all about counter culture and the like.
just as we finish a late dinner, blow up is on the telly, so i watch the first half of that, remembering the impact it had on me back in the day when i first saw it....
i should write about it later(i was probably one of the few people in britain who actually published the original short story that the film is based on... in a fanzine that i used to produce!).
sunday afternoon, and we go into town to meet babylikesscarymovies(aka: kim) and boyfriend(i always insist that a model brings a chaperone...), whom we take back to the house.

set-up is already there, owing to saturday's shoot so i've just got to hang around and wait for kim to be styled... she lied ha-ha, saying she wasn't very good or experienced in front of the camera, but the moment the shutter clicked, it was as if she turned on her "model pose" function and actually became a completely different person... kim is quite tall, so i had to stand on a chair for the shots, which was good as i wanted to do some playing around with perspective(the problem with using poses from 50's sources is that the images tend to be very flat, so i just thought i'd do some standing over her ...and it worked rather well).

session over, shaking hands(results to be seen later), and i break it down and relax...
only to get up the next day to hop on a train up north to a small town outside manchester, to visit alan haven for a chat.... i've got a stinking headache from taking photos all weekend but i struggle through as it's enjoyable listening to him and even get to watch him jam on his keyboards... not many people can say they've had the honour.
it's a nice little town where he lives, surrounded by rolling hills and serviced by a rattling old train... makes me think of kilmarnock in a lot of ways.
there you go, weekend over - i arrive in birmingham and it's squad cars everywhere in the city around midnight, flashing blue lights and drama... i catch a cab and go home to sleep for 12 hours...
